3D printing is changing the Dollhouse Miniature Industry and at a fast rate! Need proof? Head over to Instagram and almost all mini creators are showing off their newly printed 3D miniatures! It’s so cool to see what everyone is making!
There are several reasons why 3D Printing for Dollhouse Miniatures is so popular. First is that its so affordable! One can purchase a 3D printer for as low as $200. Another reason its so popular, is you can make just about anything for your dollhouse! The possibilites are endless!
With these pros, also comes a few cons. My biggest challenge was the huge learning curve. First you have to pick the right printer for you. (more on that below). Then after getting your printer set up, my challenge was to get my first print to stick to the build plate! I did find that it was actually the envirnoment in my studio, which was too cold for the printer to properly work. I never would have thought that was the problem!
My next challenge was learning a 3D platform for creating the 3D models to print. I recommend starting with TinkerCad, or just purchase them! Also, there are a lot of free STL files out there, you just have to do a little searching.
BUT with all that said…. 3D printing is totally worth it! It’s so rewarding to say "I just made that!" and like I said… you can make just about anything you need for your dollhouse! It’s pretty amazing.
To help you further your knowledge of 3D printing, listen to the latest podcast episode I created with Jim from The Edge Of Tech. He is one of the smartest guys I know when it come to all things Techy! Jim knows so much about 3D printing and If you are just getting started or have been printing for awhile, you are going to learn something. Promise!
3D Printing Tips:
•Photoshop 3D files can be put directly into your slicer (I use Lychee)
•Tinkercad is a free, easy-to-use app for 3D designing
•Types of printers: FDM (prints using PLA filament) and SLA (uses resin). Both are very affordable and fairly small.
•Worried about toxic fumes with SLA? Anycubic came out with plant-based resin
•Remember, you don't need a very large build plate for dollhouse miniatures!
